Lessons From Nature

There are so many amazing lessons that we can learn from nature. One lesson I learned from nature was several years ago was that the sun always rises after the darkness. This was brought to my mind again today as I was on a group mentoring call with Kirk Duncan. He shared the following quote by Marcel Proust, “For a seed to achieve it’s greatest expression, it must come completely undone. The shell cracks, it’s insides come out, and everything changes. to someone who doesn’t understand growth, it would look like complete destruction.”

Push Through and Bloom

Kirk then talked about how plants do 50% of their growth in the roots. Plants have a strong base to be able to grown up out of the soil.

I found this great representation on Pinterest.

Another lesson from nature comes from a story I heard several years ago. Hugh B. Brown shared a lesson from his life.

He told of purchasing a rundown farm in Canada many years ago. As he went about cleaning up and repairing his property, he came across a currant bush that had grown over six feet (1.8 m) high and was yielding no berries, so he pruned it back drastically, leaving only small stumps. Then he saw a drop like a tear on the top of each of these little stumps, as if the currant bush were crying, and thought he heard it say:

“How could you do this to me? I was making such wonderful growth. … And now you have cut me down. Every plant in the garden will look down on me. … How could you do this to me? I thought you were the gardener here.”

Hugh B. Brown replied, “Look, little currant bush, I am the gardener here, and I know what I want you to be. I didn’t intend you to be a fruit tree or a shade tree. I want you to be a currant bush, and someday, little currant bush, when you are laden with fruit, you are going to say, ‘Thank you, Mr. Gardener, for loving me enough to cut me down.’”

Years later, Hugh B. Brown was a field officer in the Canadian Army serving in England. When a superior officer became a battle casualty, he was in line to be promoted to general, and he was summoned to London. But even though he was fully qualified for the promotion, it was denied him because he was a Mormon. The commanding general said in essence, “You deserve the appointment, but I cannot give it to you.” What he had spent 10 years hoping, praying, and preparing for slipped through his fingers in that moment because of blatant discrimination. Continuing his story he stated:

“I got on the train and started back … with a broken heart, with bitterness in my soul. … When I got to my tent, … I threw my cap on the cot. I clenched my fists, and I shook them at heaven. I said, ‘How could you do this to me, God? I have done everything I could do to measure up. There is nothing that I could have done—that I should have done—that I haven’t done. How could you do this to me?’ I was as bitter as gall.

“And then I heard a voice, and I recognized the tone of this voice. It was my own voice, and the voice said, ‘I am the gardener here. I know what I want you to do.’ The bitterness went out of my soul, and I fell on my knees by the cot to ask forgiveness for my ungratefulness. …

“… And now, almost 50 years later, I look up to [God] and say, ‘Thank you, Mr. Gardener, for cutting me down, for loving me enough to hurt me.’”

I am just know beginning to understand growth. As I look back on my life the growth beneath the surface did not feel like growth. It only felt painful and destructive. I didn’t realize that those times of complete destruction, being buried, or being cut down were just part of my growth.

Thanks to amazing mentors and coaches, I am seeing growth as well as areas where I am strengthening my roots and other areas where I am blooming.

Misty Tripoli stated, “The most helpful coaches are the ones who can help you better understand YOURSELF, your abilities, your weaknesses, your blind spots, and your opportunities.”

When did you stop?

When Did You Stop?

When did you stop dreaming?

When did you stop exploring?

When did you stop dancing?

When did you stop believing?

When did you stop…….. whatever that you are no longer doing?

Today, these thoughts hit me hard. Babies and little children don’t care what others think. Everything is amazing, possible, and exciting. They believe, they trust, they explore, they experiment, and they keep trying. They are not worried about someone watching them, judging them, or something happening. They fall, they get back up!

Then the following scripture popped in my head Matthew 18:3(KJV) And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Emphasis added.)

As I spoke with a friend yesterday, we talked about her vision for something AMAZING!!! Like changing lives amazing, but then came all of the reasons, excuses, fears, doubts, and on and on. I know you know what I am talking about.

So, again I ask:

When did you stop dreaming?

When did you stop exploring?

When did you stop dancing?

When did you stop believing?

When did you stop _______________? (You fill in the blank.)

The truth is it doesn’t matter when you stopped, but understanding why does matter. Now I don’t mean the why as in the story behind it, but why as in why you made the decision to stop.

Well, let me explain it this way, as children there are experiences that happen and your sub-conscience mind makes a decision, then it creates a belief. In other words your subconscious mind is a big memory bank that stores your life experiences, memories and belief as stories. Then it uses those stories keep you “safe”. If you look at it from a different perspective, rather then keeping you safe, it often keeps you stuck. Either you are doing the same things over and over again or you are afraid of getting hurt, being judged, or making a mistake.

When you are aware of the why, you can thank your subconscious mind for doing its job and choose to dream, explore, dance, believe, and create whatever you want.

How you ask? It so simple that Nike used it as their slogan for years; Just do it!

Dream – lay down on the grass, watch the clouds and think about what you want to do, or be. Start writing down what you want for yourself, your family, your life.

Explore – observe the world around you. What do you see, hear, smell, feel? What do you want to understand more?

Dance – turn on your favorite music and just let your body express it’s self. STOP OVERTHINKING IT! Just do it!

If you don’t know how to even start doing it, find someone to mentor you. The Webster Dictionary states that a Mentor is a trusted counselor or guide. Find someone that is doing whatever it is you want to do and ask them to teach you.

Everything is AMAZING, POSSIBLE, and EXCITING! Start believing, trusting, exploring, experimenting, and keep trying. STOP worrying about everyone else and if something will happening. If you fall, get back up!

YOU, yes YOU reading this get to decide how your story is written. You can live based on the story your subconscious created when you didn’t know any better or you can write the story you want to live into and then take a step forward and create it.

Start dreaming now!

Start exploring now!

Start dancing now!

Start whatever else your heart desires now!

Music, Movement, and Mood – Just Dance

I have always loved to crank up the music when I am in the car by myself. A few weeks ago my husband cranked up the music while we were working around the house. What I noticed was a shift in the mood. We all sang along with the music and moved to the beat was we completed our tasks.

Since then I have been exploring how music and movement can improve my mood. One of the things I discovered is that when I am sitting at my desk working, my energy seems to drain. When I add upbeat music, I feel more energized. Even better if I get up and dance, I can return to my tasks and be more productive.

Our bodies are meant to move

“In less than two generations, physical activity has dropped by 20% in the U.K. and 32% in the U.S. In China, the drop is 45% in less than one generation. Vehicles, machines and technology now do our moving for us. What we do in our leisure time doesn’t come close to making up for what we’ve lost” – designedtomove.org

Movement affects every aspect of our physical and emotional health. It helps regulate on hormones and metabolism, supports circulation & respiration,  aids in digestion, immunity and detoxification of the body. Movement that you enjoy improves your mood.

Just Dance

You don’t have trained to dance. Dance is simply moving to the music. That music can be audible or just in your hear. Dancing helps us connect our mind and emotions with our bodies.

“Dance is more than the exploring of different ways to make a shape or learning a series of steps to music; it is a way of moving that uses the body as an instrument of expression and communication. – http://www.camarilloacademy.com/2011/09/why-dance/

The benefits of dancing are innumerable. Here are a few of the reasons I think EVERYONE should dance.

  1. It allows self expression. There is no right or wrong way to do it.
  2. Provides a physical and emotional release.
  3. Improves Strength, Flexibility, and Endurance
  4. Improves your connection to your body which improves self-confidence and self-esteem.
  5. Improves mental functioning
  6. Improves balance and spatial awareness
  7. It’s fun!!!!

Learning to LOVE My Body and Myself

I never loved my body. I was always finding something wrong with it. I found things wrong with my eyes, my hair, my weight. I was taller then my older sister and I associated that with BIGGER, FATTER, and wrong. I have spent most of my life over the “NORMAL” weight for my height. I grew up seeing actresses and thought they were what you were supposed to look like.

It has taken me years to learn how to love my body. I am still a work in progress and will catch myself negatively talking about my body.

2004 to 2007 I was my heaviest and I only took pictures with my family. I was suffering from postpartum depression. I was scared. I was trying to hide from my x-husband. (I share that on Beyond Abuse Essential Healing) My weight was the way I protected myself and hid.

Between 2005 and 2007 I was on fertility drugs and gained even more weight. I didn’t like how I looked or felt. We decided to stop fertility treatments. I decided to take my life back so I could play with my girls and do the things I love like camping and sports.

Team Strong Enough 2010
Most of Team Strong Enough After the Half Marathon

2009 Family PhotoIn 2007 I started making better choices with my food and working out daily. Then I started running, like really running. I started with 5Ks. In 2008, we were blessed with a son and I continued on my healthy path. Once he was born I got back in to running. I got back to doing 5Ks and then work up to doing a Half marathon. My first was as part of team Strong Enough with the Coleman Family and Friends in April of 2010. Ragnar 2010I aslo participated in the Wasatch Back Ragnar Relay Race. This was definitely the healthiest time in my life.

Salt Lake Half Marathon 2011In April of 2011, I ran my second half marathon and even reached my goal for my finishing time. But I also tore the meniscus in both knees. This lead to a lot of pain and surgery. The knee surgeries made it impossible to ever run again. I never fully recovered physically or emotionally.

The weight packed back on and so did all of the emotional weight from my past.

In 2017, I had enough. I was tired of hurting and not enjoying life. After seeing 3 surgeons I finally found one that would do the knee replacements that I needed. And so my health journey began again with my first replacement done in July of 2018 and my second in September of 2018.

I also took a seminar that reminded me of who I am. It gave me skills to add to the knowledge I have as an Essential Oil Coach. I have taken this knowledge to start Loving my body and myself. I know thank my body daily. I talk to my body. I support my body physically and emotionally with essential oils.

This is where I am at today. Half way between my heaviest and my healthiest. I am grateful for my body and I love it!!!

I am passionate about helping others learn those same techniques. I want teach and mentor as many people as I can to love their bodies and their self. Follow me on Faceboook for upcoming training.
